BlackBerry sets up server in Mumbai to aid interception

NEW DELHI: Acceding to India's security concerns, Canada-based Research in Motion - makers of BlackBerry smart phones - has finally set up a 'server' in Mumbai to provide a mechanism for lawful interception of its messenger services.

"A team of officials from security agencies has inspected the server. Test runs are going on to check its effectiveness. Required permission for direct linkage for lawful interception of BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) services is likely to be issued shortly," an official said.

By setting up the server in India, RIM has had to drop its reluctance to make an exception to its policy of securing communication from any real time interception.

The department of telecommunication has also asked Nokia to do what RIM has done so that its push mails can be legally tracked as and when required by security agencies.

India has been pressing RIM to provide a mechanism to intercept its messenger and enterprise services as security agencies had pointed to the use of such means by terrorist groups. The matter was pursued over the last couple of years before the Canadian company agreed to allow tracking of BBM services while the government has spared BlackBerry Enterprise Services (BES) for now.

Security agencies believe BES communication is not as much a concern as it takes place between employees of companies that subscribe to the service.

DoT has informed the home ministry that there are about 5,000 enterprise servers for BES. RIM representatives had earlier explained that BlackBerry mobile devices send encrypted emails routed to BES located with the service provider. BES decrypts the messages and sends it to the email server of the service provider where it is stored in decrypted form. Then the message is pushed to the BlackBerry device in encrypted form.

Presently, the onus of giving access to security agencies to monitor information on these smart phones lies with service providers. According to the licensing conditions, service providers are liable to put in a mechanism to allow security agencies to intercept any conversation or message of any subscriber whenever required.

Now, check status of train berths, timings on Facebook

Posted on:

Expanding its online reach, Railways' Delhi Division has come up with a dedicated page on social networking site Facebook where passengers can check out availability of berths, train timings and other related information.

"We have opened a page on Facebook to inform passengers about the status of vacant berths as well as the arrival and departure of trains. The page is linked with the National Train Inquiry Service and constantly updated," said a senior Delhi Division official.

Besides the status of berths and train timings, the page will also provide detailed information about arrivals and departures at the exact platform number at New Delhi, Nizamuddin and Old Delhi stations.

Aiming at preventing misuse of available seats by "unscrupulous elements", Railways has asked other zones to resort to such innovative measures and give adequate publicity regarding the facility of booking vacant accommodation available on trains at current ticket counters.

"Our aim is to create further awareness among passengers about this facility as due to lack of adequate awareness, it is being misused by unscrupulous elements for providing confirmed accommodation to passengers at a premium by using the current counter facility, said the official.

Railways has advised passengers travelling on short notice to use the facility of current reservation counters situated at the train originating main stations.

"The vacant reserved seats available on train after preparation of reservation charts can be booked at the current ticket counters of the train originating stations before departure of trains," the official said.

According to Railway rules, a reserved ticket can be booked across the Passenger Reservation System counters all over the country as well as through the Internet only upto the time of preparation of reservation charts.

After preparation of reservation charts, the berths available, if any, can be booked at the current counter available at major stations.

The reservation charts are normally prepared three to four hours before the schedule departure of the train. In case of trains leaving early morning, the charts are prepared on the previous night.

How to : Talk to your smartphone

Voice-control is a feature that not many of us use on our smartphones (available in iPhones & iPads, BlackBerry, Nokia and Android smartphones). But, app developers have taken the voice function a step ahead with voice-activated apps — facilitating hands-free computing.
It takes time to master the commands, but once you are familiar with the apps they can help navigate or dictate actions faster.

Vlingo || For BlackBerry, Android and iOS devices
Price: $10 (for add-ons)
Vlingo, a free virtual assistant app, allows you to access your emails, Twitter, Facebook, SMS and surf by using voice commands. For example: The voice command “Update Facebook; needs coffee right now” will update your Facebook status with “Needs coffee right now.”
You can also use similar commands to write a message on Twitter or search the web with a search engine (Yahoo or Google) of your choice. To dial a contact, Vlingo’s SuperDialer feature can be activated using command, “Dial XYZ.”
The app displays a preview of your message and prompts for a confirmation. The app also reads out incoming text messages and emails via SafeReader feature. For Rs 500, the app allows voice-enabled text messaging and a voice-to-text email option.In nine out of 10 cases, the app was accurate.
Voice camera Pro || For iPhone
Price: $0.99
Voice Camera Pro is an iPhone app that controls the camera using voice commands. Using the touchscreen to click pictures is usually difficult. With Voice Camera Pro clicking pictures become easy.Simple commands such as “shoot” or "double" (two shots at one go), allows hands-free photography. Use the headset in crowded places while using the voice command to transmit your comand clearly. It also allows you to customise commands. For example, if you wish to add “Say Cheese” to take a picture, then key in the words "Say Cheese" in the custom command field and save it. Next time, you utter the words the app will click a picture.
Google Voice Actions|| For Android devices
Price: Free
Launch the app, tap on the microphone icon and say what you want. That’s about all Google needs you to do with its Voice Actions app. The app allows easy search options using Google Maps to locate businesses and dial the contact automatically.You can also dictate email messages or record a note. The software is available in all phones running Android 2.2 or above. To run the app you will need to download Google Voice Search and a compatible music app from the Android Store.
To call someone, you simply have to tap the microphone button and say “Call XYZ” to dial XYZ or in case of multiple entries a list will prompt you to make your choice (home, office or mobile numbers stored on your device). To get directions, say ‘navigate to (name of place)’. The results will be displayed on Google Maps (make sure GPS is turned on).
Other features of Voice Actions allow you to directly access a website, set alarms and take notes.

Dragon Dictation || For iOS devices
Price: Free
The voice recognition application allows you to speak and instantly see your text or email messages. A free app, Dragon Dictation also sports features that allow users to dictate their social networking updates (Facebook, Twitter), send notes and reminders using voice commands. Dragon Dictation supports both US & UK English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. We found the voice-to-text conversion more accurate while using an external headset rather than speaking directly to the integrated microphone on the iPhone or iPad. Though it cannot read out your incoming mails or message like Vlingo, it does allow you to paste your dictated text onto any application using the clipboard feature. Another convenient editing feature is the list of suggested words (when the system confuses native words). After you have recorded your text, you can use the built-in keyboard to modify words or make any additions such as adding punctuation.
Created by text-to-speech software creator Nuance, Dragon Dictation is a boon for those who find mobile keyboards too cramped for typing. This free app should be a part of iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch list of apps.
SpaceWilli || For Android devices
Price: Free
SpaceWilli is a voice-controlled adventure game. Designed on voice input instead of traditional buttons or touch control, users have to steer a spaceship, christened SpaceWilli, with their voice. If you raise your voice, the spacecraft flies higher (and steers ahead of the obstacles) and when voice goes down, SpaceWilli also climbs down and crashes.
Learning to control the game with your voice does take a little time but it is a fun app to play with. You would be required to calibrate your voice to control the game and SpaceWilli is suitable to Android tablet PCs too.

And now, e-cheques that save paper, but look real

Traditional cheques may soon be a thing of the past. In perhaps a world's first, a team of British researchers claims to have developed an electronic cheque which offers the advantages of the traditional system but cuts down much of the processing and transport costs to the bank.
The hi-tech cheque book looks and works much the same as the one used for generations.
But to write on it, one needs a digital pen which has got a tiny camera attached to it to record any strokes made against millions of tiny dots printed on the surface, say the researchers.

The pen sends the details to the bank of the client via a wireless link. And as the cheques and digital pen work only with the customer's own secure computer hub, they are said to be of no use to a thief, say the researchers.
Lead researcher Dr John Vines said the tech-cheque was developed in partnership with a group of people aged over 80.
"The beauty is that it's safe and cheap electronic transaction for banks, but it's a physical paper-based transaction for the customer," he was quoted by the 'Daily Mail' as saying.
The researchers from York, Newcastle and Northumbria universities have said that they would hold talks with banks. Currently, a digital pen costs 80 pounds but this is expected to fall sharply.
Michelle Mitchell of Age UK said: "Hopefully banks will invest in this kind of innovative design which preserves what many people find invaluable about cheques."

Innovative programme to mentor student start-ups...To receive 1-year mentorship via Tata First Dot, an initiative by Tata Group and NEN

Breson, a two-year old student start-up based in Mumbai dealing with development and manufacturing of vertical axis windmills and wind pumps, always faces challenges with respect to revenue generation. Founder Bhupesh Sharma feels since it is small entity and a new product, making people aware about its advantages is its biggest concern. Though they have been working on a sales model, they are yet to see a significant pick-up in revenue. What the company needs the most is a mentor.
Similarly, Novo Informatics, a life science-based R&D start-up has been a slow process of development due to scarcity of fund. Sahil Kapoor, the company's founder, is looking for investors to pace up the whole pipeline and some development mentoring.
 Sharma, Kapoor and 28 more start-up founders have found a solution to their problem. Tata First Dot, an initiative by the Tata Group of companies in partnership with National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN), will mentor 30 startups from across India. The 30 short-listed ventures will be provided professional mentorship via the NEN mentoring platform for one year and will be given an opportunity to network with entrepreneurs, angel investors, mentors, experts and fellow student startups.
The programme consisted of multiple strands which were a combination of workshops, competition and showcase, conference and award event, mentoring and ongoing support from the community. This would create opportunities for the companies to increase their knowledge, resources and networks to enable them to succeed in their entrepreneurial journey — either growing their student ventures, or by launching them into larger opportunities after graduation.
Says Nikhil Daga, founder of Phodphad!, an educational networking site short-listed for the mentorship programme, "I believe two things are crucial for the success of an enterprise — talent and experience. As passionate youngsters, we do have the talent to run enterprise but we lack the experience leading to many common mistakes. Mentorship helps us learn from those who have been there and done that. Tata First Dot was a great initiative which connected us to some top notch mentors who helped us look at our enterprise Phodphad! from a different perspective. With their proper guidance and mentoring we have taken our steps in the right direction to take Phodphad! to the next level."
The initiative started with 10 workshops organised across different cities with 40-60 students/student entrepreneurs participating in each. Next, there was a competition to select the 30 candidates. The mentorship programme of one-year duration for the 30 startups has just begun.
Atul Agrawal, vice president, corporate affairs, Tata Services, said, "This initiative will help in building the entrepreneurial ecosystem in India. We chose student entrepreneurs because being the youngest entrepreneurs in the nation, they are at a crucial stage. This programme will not only help them in getting the right kind of exposure, but also help them in connecting with their needs. We want them to be job givers and not merely job seekers."
What are the students expecting out of this initiative? Kapoor of Novo Informatics is confident they will get relevant networking platform to develop his business.
Further, Sharma of Breson believes Tata First Dot, through their mentoring session can guide him to look forward for several other models that can help in revenue generation and reduce costs related to marketing.
NEN officials said Tata First Dot was the only existent mentorship platform developed with their collaboration for students in India. Last year, NEN and IBM conducted the IBM-NEN Mentor Melas. This included 12 extensive mentoring sessions designed to provide entrepreneurs an opportunity to spend time one-on-one with three different mentors to discuss the challenges they face in their business. In this, experts from IBM acted as mentors to promote/assist budding entrepreneurs, both students and professionals.

Program to enter the sale value and print the agent's commission

Posted on:

#include <iostream.h>
#include <conio.h>

void main()
{
clrscr();
long int svalue;
float commission;
cout << "Enter the total sale value : " << endl;
cin>>svalue;
if(svalue<=10000)
{
commission=svalue*5/100;
cout << "For a total sale value of $" << svalue << ", ";
cout << "the agent's commission is $" << commission;
}
else if(svalue<=25000)
{
commission=svalue*10/100;
cout << "For a total sale value of $" << svalue << ", ";
cout << "the agent's commission is $" << commission;
}
else if(svalue>25000)
{
commission=svalue*20/100;
cout << "For a total sale value of $" << svalue << ", ";
cout << "the agent's commission is $" << commission;
}
getch();
}
This program takes in the total sale value as a screen input from the user.
The program then calculates the agent's commission with the help of the 'IF-ELSE' command as follows :
5% if the total sale value is less than or equal to $10000.
10% if the total sale value is less than or equal to $25000.
20% if the total sale value is greater than $25000. It then outputs the agent's commission using the 'cout' command.

Using Reconnaissance to Gain Physical Access

Posted on:

Every weekday at 3 p.m. the Federal Express driver stops at the loading dock of a building where the offices of Medical Associates, Inc. are located. When the driver backs the truck up to the rear door of the building, he presses the buzzer and lets the security guard know he is at the door. Because the building’s security personnel recognize the driver—as he comes to the door every day around the same time for pickup and drop-off—they remotely unlock the door and allow the driver to enter. A hacker is watching this process from a car in the parking lot and takes note of the procedure to gain physical entry into the building.

The next day, the hacker carries a large cardboard box toward the door just as the Federal Express driver has been given entry to the building. The driver naturally holds the door for the hacker because he is carrying what appears to be a heavy, large box. They exchange pleasantries and the hacker heads for the elevator up to Medical Associates’ offices. The hacker leaves the box in the hallway of the building as he heads to his target office.

Once he reaches the front desk of the Medical Associates office, he asks to speak with the office manager whose name he previously looked up on the company website. The receptionist leaves her desk to go get the office manager, and the hacker reaches over the desk
and plugs a USB drive containing hacking tools into the back of her computer. Because the computer is not locked with a password, he double-clicks on the USB drive icon and it silently installs the hacking software on the receptionist’s computer. He removes the USB drive and quickly exits the office suite and building undetected.

This is an example of how reconnaissance and understanding the pattern of people’s behavior can enable a hacker to gain physical access to a target—in this case the Medical Associates network via a Trojaned system—and circumvent security checkpoints.

Reconnaissance
The term reconnaissance comes from the military and means to actively seek an enemy’s intentions by collecting and gathering information about an enemy’s composition and capabilities via direct observation, usually by scouts or military intelligence personnel trained in surveillance. In the world of ethical hacking, reconnaissance applies to the process of information gathering. Reconnaissance is a catchall term for watching the hacking target and gathering information about how, when, and where they do things. By identifying patterns of behavior, of people or systems, an enemy could find and exploit a loophole.

What are the method for Information Gathering?

Posted on:
tags: , , , ,

The first step of the hacking process is gathering information
on a target. Information gathering, also known as footprinting,
is the process of gathering all available information
about an organization. In the age of the Internet, information
is available in bits and pieces from many different sources.
Seemingly insignificant bits of information can be enlightening
when pieced together—which is the purpose of information
gathering. Footprinting can be effective in identifying highvalue
targets, which is what hackers will be looking for to
focus their efforts.

A hacker uses information-gathering techniques to determine organizations’ high-value targets, where the most valuable information resides. Not only does information gathering help identify where the information is located, but it also helps determine the best way to gain access to the targets. This information can then be used to identify and eventually hack target systems. Many people jump right into running hacking tools, but information gathering is critical in minimizing the chance of detection and assessing where to spend the most time and effort. Social engineering can also be used to obtain more information about an organization, which can ultimately lead to an attack. Social engineering as an information-gathering tool
is highly effective at exploiting the most vulnerable asset in an organization: the people.

Human interaction and the willingness to give out information make people an excellent source of information. Good social-engineering techniques can speed up the hacking process and in most cases will yield information much more easily.

Pune, India boy creates Indian Facebook like website - zettaconnect

A 14-year-old boy from Pune has come up with his own social networking site,Zettaconnect.co.in with interesting features like Facebook.

The eight standard student, Vignesh Sundarajan launched the social networking site on Jan 21 after four months of conscientious efforts. Zetta means a bit of memory in computer language and connect is to connect with people, Vignesh explained in response to the name of the site.

He created the social networking site using computer languages like C, HTML and PHP.

The Pune lad could well be answer to Facebookfounder Mark Zuckerberg, who has always claimed that the immensely popular Facebook was "an accident in creativity."

Meanwhile, the site offers games, chatting, uploading of photos and videos etc. Currently, the site has 26 members including his friends and family members. Vignesh has registered for the website with his pocket money of Rs 99 per day and he is hopeful to shift the site to .com once he starts making money.
